Construction Dumpster Rental in Detroit, MI

Construction dumpster rental is the core of what we do. Detroit Dumpster Co keeps 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40-yard roll-offs moving between job sites across Metro Detroit: rehabs in Highland Park and the east side, renovations in Corktown, Midtown and the Grosse Pointes, tear-down rebuilds in Royal Oak, roofing across the post-war suburbs, and demolition from garages to whole houses.

Contractors call us because we answer the phone at any hour, we turn swaps around fast, and the price we quote is the price on the invoice: one flat rate per haul with the weight allowance stated up front.

Sizing construction debris

Weight decides the size on a construction job. A gut renovation, a new build or a fit-out produces bulky, light debris, so a 30-yard is the usual container and a 40-yard the choice on a big site. Roofing shingles, plaster and lath, concrete, block and brick are heavy: they go in 10, 15 or 20-yard containers, loaded level with the rail, so the truck stays within its legal weight. Mixed loads are fine; tell us the rough split and we will pick the box. Our size guide has the dimensions and allowances.

Demolition permits and asbestos in Detroit

Demolition in Detroit needs a wrecking permit from the Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Avenue, (313) 224-3202, applied for through the City’s eLAPS portal. Under City Code Sec. 8-2-20 the permit is issued only to a licensed wrecking contractor or to the owner of a homestead property, except for a one-storey frame structure of 500 square feet or less; the application is notarised, every utility has to confirm in writing that service is terminated before the permit is issued, adjoining owners get written notice, and the code requires suitable provision for the disposal of the solid waste and wetting-down of anything that would raise dust. Fees follow the Michigan Building Code schedule and are not published as a single figure, so confirm the amount when you apply. In a local historic district BSEED forwards the application to the Historic District Commission, which has to approve the work first.

Michigan EGLE applies the federal asbestos rules to every demolition and to renovations above the thresholds: notification through the MiEnviro Portal at least ten working days before the work, with private residences of four units or fewer exempt from the standard. Regulated asbestos goes to a Type II landfill by arrangement; it never rides in a mixed load. Older Detroit houses can have asbestos in floor tile, siding, pipe insulation and plaster, so have suspect material tested before a gut renovation.

Where construction debris goes

Our loads go to permitted transfer stations and landfills in Wayne County: the J. Fons transfer station on East McNichols takes renovation waste by weight (Monday to Friday 7 to 5, Saturday 7 to 1), the City of Riverview’s Land Preserve on Grange Road ((734) 281-4263, weekdays 7 to 4) takes construction and demolition waste, and the big regional landfills at Carleton Farms in New Boston, Woodland Meadows in Van Buren Township and Sauk Trail Hills in Canton take the rest. The City’s curbside bulk collection is capped at two cubic yards and will not take concrete, brick, asphalt, shingles, tires, asbestos or paint, so a roll-off is the practical route for any real quantity.

Construction Dumpster Rental FAQ
  • Can you deliver to a site with no one there?
Yes. Give us the drop location, gate code if any, and where you want the door facing. We send a photo when it is placed.
  • How fast can you swap a full container?
Usually the same day if you call before noon, otherwise next morning. For long jobs we schedule swaps in advance.
  • What about a dumpster in the street for a downtown job?
Detroit requires a DPW right-of-way permit from City Engineering (2 Woodward Avenue, Suite 642, (313) 224-3935), and under City Code Sec. 42-2-54 the hauler holds it for any container of two cubic yards or more, so we pull it. The fee is set by City Engineering rather than published, contractors carry a $2,500 surety bond with the City, and an unpermitted obstruction can cost up to $500 and 90 days for each day it sits there (Sec. 43-8-1).
  • Do you take roofing shingles?
Yes, in a 15 or 20-yard container sized for weight. Tell us the square footage and the number of layers.
