Frequently Asked Questions

  • What size dumpster do I need?
Most home cleanouts and remodels fit a 15 or 20-yard container; heavy debris like concrete, dirt and shingles goes in a 10 or 15-yard because of weight; renovations and new builds take a 30 or 40-yard. Describe the job and we size it on the phone, or see our dumpster sizes page.
  • How much does dumpster rental cost in Detroit?
We quote one flat price up front based on the container size and the material. It includes delivery, the rental period, pickup and a disposal weight allowance; the only possible extra is the per-ton overage rate we state on the same quote. Call (313) 397-0178 for a number in one call.
  • Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Detroit?
Not on your own driveway or private lot. In a Detroit street, alley or on the sidewalk the City requires a DPW right-of-way permit, and under City Code Sec. 42-2-54 the hauler holds it, so we pull it from City Engineering (2 Woodward Avenue, Suite 642, (313) 224-3935) when you book. Our permit guide has the details and the eleven suburban rules.
  • How fast can you deliver?
Call before noon and we can usually deliver the same afternoon across Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, the Grosse Pointes, Dearborn, Ferndale and Warren. Otherwise, next day.
  • How long can I keep the dumpster?
As long as your project needs in Detroit and most suburbs; most home rentals run three to seven days and contractors keep containers for weeks with swaps. Dearborn caps a driveway dumpster at seven cumulative days in 180 unless a building permit is open, and Grosse Pointe Park and Shores allow five and ten days, so we set the dates to fit the town.
  • What can’t go in the dumpster?
Michigan law keeps whole tires, yard waste, lead-acid batteries, used oil, liquids, hazardous waste and untreated asbestos out of landfills. Refrigerant appliances need the gas recovered first, and paint, solvents and chemicals go to the City’s household hazardous waste drop-off at 2000 East Ferry. Our guide lists where each item goes.
  • Where does the waste go?
To permitted transfer stations and landfills in Wayne County: the J. Fons transfer station on East McNichols for renovation waste, the Riverview Land Preserve for construction and demolition debris, and the regional landfills at Carleton Farms, Woodland Meadows and Sauk Trail Hills. Clean yard waste goes to a composting site, as Michigan law requires. The City’s curbside bulk collection will not take construction debris, so a roll-off is the practical route.
  • Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We set the container down rather than dragging it and put boards under the rails on request. Tell us if the surface is new or decorative and we will plan the placement around it.
  • What are the rules in Dearborn, the Grosse Pointes and the other suburbs?
Each one is different. Dearborn: seven cumulative days in 180 on a driveway, one container at a time, tarped, six months with a building permit. Grosse Pointe Park: five days on a driveway by permission of Public Services. Grosse Pointe Shores: ten days with a City permit. Hamtramck and Highland Park: $25 for five days in the street. Royal Oak: $130 permit, $2,000 bond and $1 million insurance for the street. Warren, Southfield, Sterling Heights and Taylor publish no dumpster permit. Each service-area page states what the town publishes and who to ring.
  • Do you offer junk removal as well as dumpsters?
Yes. Our junk removal crew loads, hauls and disposes of furniture, appliances and whole-house cleanouts, priced by the load with a firm quote on site.
  • How much space does the truck need?
About 60 feet of straight clearance to back in and roll the container off, and roughly 14 feet of overhead clearance, free of low wires and branches. Send a photo of the spot if you are unsure.
  • Can I fill it above the top?
No. The load must be level with the top rail so the truck can tarp it and travel legally. We will ask you to level an overfilled container before we haul it.
  • What happens if I go over the weight allowance?
You pay the per-ton overage rate we quoted when you booked, nothing more. Light loads rarely get near the allowance; heavy loads are why we size concrete, dirt and shingles into smaller containers.
  • Do you serve outside Detroit?
Yes: Hamtramck, Highland Park, Dearborn, the five Grosse Pointes, Livonia and Taylor in Wayne County, Ferndale, Royal Oak and Southfield in Oakland County, and Warren and Sterling Heights in Macomb County. See the service area.
